Rochdale canal now litter free in Newton Heath!

The end of March signals time for British Waterways annual towpath tidy. Clean-up events are held along the various canal networks to spruce them up before the start of the boating season.

The second event held in Manchester focused on the Rochdale canal as it flows through Newton Heath in East Manchester. The event was organised in partnership with British Waterways, The Waterways Trust and Mersey Basin Campaign with five representatives from the three organisations attending. Five members of the Rochdale Canal Society also kindly gave up their time to come along and volunteer at the event as well.

 

Despite there being practically gale-force winds during the event (litter picking is almost impossible in high winds!), the small team did really well. 15 bin bags full of bank side litter were collected and a large amount was removed by British Waterways from the channel. When the rubbish was taken to the tip, it weighed in at 0.34 tonnes which is a brilliant result especially under the very windy circumstances!

Thanks are in order to British Waterways and The Waterways Trust for organising the event, to Mersey Basin Campaign for their support and to the members of the Rochdale Canal Society who volunteered their time to help brighten up the Rochdale Canal, it made it a really good event.
